The Structure of Strategy-Proof Social Choice: General Characterization and Possibility Results on Median Spaces
نویسنده
چکیده
We define a general notion of single-peaked preferences based on abstract betweenness relations. Special cases are the classical example of single-peaked preferences on a line, the separable preferences on the hypercube, the “multi-dimensionally singlepeaked” preferences on the product of lines, but also the unrestricted preference domain. Generalizing and unifying the existing literature, we show that a social choice function is strategy-proof on a sufficiently rich domain of generalized single-peaked preferences if and only if it takes the form of voting by issues (“voting by committees”) satisfying a simple condition called the “Intersection Property.” Based on the Intersection Property, we show that the class of preference domains associated with “median spaces” gives rise to the strongest possibility results; in particular, we show that the existence of strategy-proof social choice rules that are nondictatorial and neutral requires an underlying median space. A space is a median space if, for every triple of elements, there is a fourth element that is between each pair of the triple; numerous examples are given (some well-known, some novel), and the structure of median spaces and the associated preference domains is analyzed.

متن کاملThe Structure of Strategy-Proof Social Choice Part II: Non-Dictatorship, Anonymity and Neutrality*
Domains of generalized single-peaked preferences are classified in terms of the extent to which they enable well-behaved strategy-proof social choice. Generalizing the Gibbard-Satterthwaite Theorem, we characterize the domains that admit non-dictatorial strategy-proof social choice functions. We also provide characterizations of the domains that enable locally non-dictatorial, anonymous, and ne...
متن کاملSocial Logic of Kitchen Space in Vernacular Architecture (Case Study: Qeshm Housing) – Examination and Analysis
Culture and social relations play a significant role in the formation of the structure of vernacular housing of any region, especially in the Islamic countries where privacy has a considerable effect on the vernacular culture, and consequently, on the house’s structure. Among the house spaces, the kitchen is more affected than other spaces by such issues so that its relations pattern with other...
متن کاملA note on Condorcet consistency and the median voter
We discuss to which extent the median voter theorem extends to the domain of single-peaked preferences on median spaces. After observing that on this domain a Condorcet winner need not exist, we show that if a Condorcet winner does exist, then it coincides with the median alternative (“the median voter”). Based on this result, we propose two non-cooperative games that implement the unique strat...
متن کاملProgramming social choice in logic: some basic experimental results when profiles are restricted
Social choice theory argues mathematical models and their logical consequences for group decision making based on individuals’ preference orderings axiomatically. The most basic results have been proved in this field are two impossibility results for group decision making. Arrow’s general (im)possibility theorem for preference aggregation procedures, i.e., there is no nondictatorial social welf...
